Earth Hour 09
Quote:
Earth Hour is an international event organised by the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature/World Wildlife Fund), and held on the last Saturday of March each year, which asks households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change.
Earth Hour 2009 is from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time, 2009-03-28. Currently, 82 countries and more than 2100 cities are 'committed to Earth Hour 2009', a huge increase from people participating in 35 countries for Earth Hour 2008.[4] 1 billion 'votes' is the stated aim for Earth Hour 2009,[5] in the context of the pivotal 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference.
Earth Hour is currently taking place on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 8:30 pm, local time.

So, my fellow defenders of Tyria, are you going to hit the Power button tonight? I know I am.
ANET should turn off GW servers tonight. (;

I'll probably be watching basketball.
They should have it at sometime in the afternoon, when you could like, go outside and stuff...
At 9pm here, it will probably be below 20F and pitch dark... Without electricity, I could... light a candle and read a book? Maybe. Meditate?

I hate events that try to raise awareness because they don't accomplish as much as other forms of activism.

I agree with Kanyatta. If it was sometime during the afternoon, I'd participate. I'm usually outside during the afternoon when the weather is nice anyways. Tonight is my friend's birthday party. I'm not going to sit in a dark house with dozens of other people for an hour.

This will only hurt the power company's Generators more than anything. If everyone shuts off the power/lights whatever it'll leave an excess amount of electricity in the lines with nowhere to go. And when those lights come back on it'll cause a drain surge on the line which will just hurt the generators more causing them damage as they work harder to catch back up with demand.
If you really want to make a difference, change your electricity use over the entire year not just one night.

Funny because one hour of one day in a month isn't going to show anything, when meters are checked monthly. The power plants aren't going to really care...easy hour for them.
These kinds of stupid events don't do anything but get stupid people on board the greenie bandwagon that's just chock full of inconsistencies and half-truths to begin with, and tug at the heartstrings of american citizens merely to push their anti-technology agendas through.

The reason for the time is probably due to it being prime time consumption.
I don't think it's bad. At the very least, it's an interesting social experiment. i did it.

I left a bunch of lights on, and made sure to turn on some extras.
This whole event is a load of propaganda. Shutting off your lights for an hour doesn't do ANYTHING to reduce carbon emissions.
